Well it’s D day, January 1st and we’ve started our 7 month trip.
I’m writing this from Heathrow airport where our flight is delayed by almost 2 hours already and we’re not too sure when it’s going to leave. It’s 10.40pm now. There are some sort of technical issues with the plane apparently. Trying not to think about that too much :-). There’s some spare part arriving from Gatwick at midnight. If it works, we’ll board then, if not, they’re putting us up in a hotel. At the mo, I’m dreaming about a hotel bed!!!
Having said that, we’re all in great spirits, at least the kids are and that’s all that matters! They’ve been running around the airport like lunatics so that’s sure to tire them out, isn’t it???
I have to say, kids are pretty amazing. Freya, our 7 year old just said she was having the time of her life making a den under the rows of seats in the waiting area. Shuna and Dervie, our 5 and 2 year olds have rounded up a troop made up of a little Danish girl and a Belgian boy and they’re running around chasing each other in circles. If only we had their energy!!
We had a great day today. We arrived in Heathrow at 11am this morning and caught the bus to Windsor. We spent the day there, visiting Windsor castle, the Queens weekend residence and we grabbed a great lunch in Windsor before coming back to Heathrow. Our budget has been blown a bit today, we’ll have to make up for it this week.
We booked our first nights accommodation about half an hour ago which was cutting it a bit fine :-). We booked a 6-bed dorm in a hostel on the beach for €21. Bargain :-). Hopefully not horrific, trip advisor reviews seem good anyway so we’ll see tomorrow!
The only issue we’ve had today was with the girls ears on the flight. Freya and Dervie were both very sore. I thought sucking lollipops would work but no joy. A Good Samaritan came to our rescue with some starbursts which worked a treat. So we’ve stocked up on them for the next flight.
Anyway on that note I’ll sign off. Despite our delays, we’re more relaxed then we have been in weeks and we’re just chuffed to be finally on the way!
Lovely to read the first update Kellys! Safe onward journey and hopefully no more delays for a while.
Fantastic to read about the start of your adventure Cara, so delighted you all feel chilled & relaxed. I think you’ll be my go to read while on maternity during night feeds!! Take care xxxx
Kids make great travellers. Amaze you every time with their ability to turn disasters around. Sophie loved meeting other kids, still talks about encounters, meals & tv shows on planes. Stuff that seemed so unremarkable to us. Soak up that sunshine! X
Brilliant – take 4 hours each out separately once a week
